OakPass in Oakland Modeled After PierPass – Terminals at the Port of Oakland are planning to subsidize weekend operations with a new fee schedule modeled after Southern California’s PierPass program.  PierPass has been in place at Los Angeles and Long Beach terminals since 2005 and Oakland is hoping the model can help alleviate major congestion problems for the Bay Area port.

Daimler’s Self-Driving Truck Read for Autobahn – Daimler has been granted authority to use its self-driving 18-wheeler in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg Germany.  Daimler’s autonomous vehicles were approved by Nevada earlier this year.  A driver will remain in the cab to intervene if necessary.

Classing the Next Generation Mega-Container Ships – Six new massive container ships with capacities over 20,000 TEUs have been ordered. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines ordered four of the vessels while MOL is expecting the other two.  The first of the ships is slated for 2017 delivery and is to be used in the Asia-Europe trade.  Lloyd’s Register is working on classing this new generation of mega ships.
