South Korean Cargo Ship Sinks – This week, a South Korean cargo ship destined for China disappeared after sending out an emergency signal. According to the South Korean Foreign Ministry, 14 crew members were rescued, while 7 seamen remain missing. Rescue ships from Hong Kong and naval vessels from China have been deployed to the scene to continue the search and rescue operation. The cause of the sinking is still unknown.

Protesters Plan to Shut Down Ports –The Occupy Oakland General Assembly called for a coordinated West Coast port shutdown. With 19 deep-water ports on the Pacific Coast, this movement could potentially delay a huge portion of American commerce – affecting tens-of-thousands of workers and millions of dollars in cargo and revenue. The ILWU Coast Committee stated that the movement will have to pursue their goal without cooperation from the union.
