ILA Continues Protest – The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) began a protest against the Marine Corps in Charleston, South Carolina on Monday by picketing outside the Marine Corps Barracks in Washington and the naval weapons station in the South Carolina port. The union is protesting the use of non-ILA labor to load and unload ammunition from military vessels.

Costa Rica Discusses Potential Free Trade Agreement with South Korea – Costa Rica and South Korea have agreed to begin discussing the possibility of a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Costa Rica plans to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which could boost trade and increase the level of economic cooperation between the two countries. An FTA with Costa Rica could be beneficial to South Korea’s export-dependent vehicle and electronic goods manufacturing industries.

Inland Port to be Built in South Carolina – The South Carolina Port Authority is working with Norfolk Southern Railway to develop an inland port near Greer, South Carolina. The inland terminal will provide truck-rail transfers of containers for port customers and is scheduled to open in September 2013.

Guatemala Joins Free Trade Agreement Negotiations – Guatemala has decided to join the group of Central American countries negotiating a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). The EFTA is made up of European countries that are not part of the European Union (EU) including Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
