Importing Flowers on Valentine’s Day – Most of the flowers received in the U.S. on Valentine’s Day are from Colombia and Ecuador. It takes 5-7 days to transport the flowers from the time they are cut to customer delivery and about 87% of those flowers come in via the Miami International Airport.

Port of San Diego Plans to Improve Operations – The Port of San Diego will soon begin construction to improve operations and increase space for project cargo at its Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. Unused buildings will be demolished to provide more functional open cargo storage areas. Construction is anticipated to begin in late February and should be complete by September.

ILA, USMX Contract Details Released – The tentative labor contract details reached between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) on February 1st has been released to the public. The six year contract includes pay raises, a compromise on carrier-paid container royalties, and continued free medical coverage for ILA members.

IATA Implements Secure Freight Principles – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is urging stakeholders to support the implementation of four Secure Freight principles aimed toward promoting global security standards. The four principles call for closer cooperation between all stakeholders, harmonization and convergence of regulations, global capacity building, and long-term commitment.
