Citing Increased Competition, Talk of LA-Long Beach Port Merger – A group made up of business, labor and civic leaders is recommending that the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach merge operations.  The idea of merging the country’s largest and 2nd largest ports is to reduce bureaucracy and bolster the complex against increasing competition from other U.S. ports.  However, many experts feel the ambitious idea is unlikely to gain much traction.

Walmart Show Off Futuristic WAVE Hybrid Truck Concept – The Arkansas based mega-retailer recently unveiled their Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience (WAVE) concept truck. The futuristic design allows it to be 20% more aerodynamic than a traditional tractor and trailer.  Also, the carbon fiber material of the trailer lowers the trailers weight by 4,000 lbs.  While it’s unlikely that the truck will actually be used in general service, Walmart says the concept allows the company to “test new technologies and new approaches.”

Amazon Pays Fine for Hazmat Shipment – Amazon paid $91,000 in civil penalties for failing to properly document and package an air freight shipment of liquid adhesive last September.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that the company violated Department of Transportation (DOT) hazardous material regulations and failed to properly train employees on how to handle these type of hazmat shipments.
