PMA Accuses ILWU of Labor Slowdowns in LA and Long Beach – The Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) accused the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) of “orchestrated job actions” starting in the Pacific Northwest and expanding to Los Angeles and Long Beach.  The PMA and the ILWU continue negotiations for a new contract to replace the one that expired on July 1st of this year.

U.S. Trade Gap Widens – The Commerce Department announced that the U.S. trade gap increased 7.6% to $43 billion.  Exports in September dropped 1.5% and, based on manufacturing indicators, are expected to remain sluggish.  Meanwhile, imports from China hit an all-time high.

Japan’s Parliament Passes Australia Free Trade Agreement – Japan’s Parliament approved a free trade pact titled Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA) this week.  The FTA would eliminate or severely reduced tariffs on most products traded between the countries.  Trade between the nations amounted to over $68 billion last year.
