EPA Seeks to Cut Airline Emissions – The Obama administration announced this week that the EPA will take steps to regulate greenhouse gas emissions in the airline industry. However, it will likely take years before new standards take effect. Aircrafts account for 2% of global emissions but are one of the fastest growing contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

Prince Rupert Continues Record Breaking Volume – The Port of Prince Rupert handled 74,881 TEUs in May, a 45.6% increase over last year. Due to labor unrest on the U.S. West Coast, Prince Rupert has seen strong growth in the first five months of the year. It remains to be seen whether the increase in volume will become a permanent fixture at the port.

Horizon Completes Sale to Matson and Pasha – Last month, Horizon Lines completed the sale of its business to Matson and the Pasha Group. Matson took over Horizon’s Alaska operation while Pasha will handle the Hawaii business going forward. Until recently, Horizon was the largest U.S. domestic carrier but had been struggling financially for years.
