UN Number

A UN number is a four-digit identification code assigned to hazardous materials and dangerous goods for transport. It helps carriers, customs authorities, warehouses, and emergency responders quickly identify the type of dangerous substance being shipped, such as flammable liquids, corrosive materials, gases, explosives, or toxic chemicals. UN numbers are used on shipping documents, labels, safety data sheets, and dangerous goods declarations to support safe and compliant transport by road, sea, rail, or air. UN numbers are assigned by the United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods.

  • Printed on dangerous goods labels and placards on packages and vehicles
  • Required on dangerous goods declarations, MSDS, and shipping documents
  • Each UN number corresponds to a specific hazardous material or class
  • Used by emergency responders to identify hazards and response procedures
