Break Bulk

Break bulk is cargo that is transported as individual pieces, units, crates, bags, drums, pallets, bundles, or oversized items instead of inside standard shipping containers. It is commonly used for freight that is too large, heavy, irregular, or specialised for containerised shipping, such as machinery, steel, construction materials, vehicles, project cargo, or industrial equipment. Break bulk cargo is handled separately during loading and unloading, so it often requires cranes, forklifts, rigging, careful stowage, and detailed cargo planning.

Break bulk cargo refers to goods transported as individual units or packages rather than in containers, including steel coils, heavy machinery, lumber, and project cargo too large for standard containers.

When Break Bulk Is Used

  • Cargo exceeding container dimensions or weight limits
  • Heavy machinery and industrial equipment
  • Project cargo for construction or energy sectors
  • Commodities shipped in bags, bundles, or bales

Despite containerization, break bulk remains essential for oversized and heavy-lift cargo.
