Container Fumigation Fee

A container fumigation fee is a charge for treating a shipping container, cargo, pallets, or wood packaging with approved fumigants to eliminate pests, insects, or biosecurity risks. It is often required for agricultural products, food goods, timber, wooden packaging, or shipments moving to countries with strict quarantine rules. The fee may cover fumigation service, certification, container handling, ventilation, inspection, and documentation needed to prove the shipment meets destination import requirements. A separate container cleaning fee may apply if the container is returned dirty or contaminated after cargo such as food products or chemicals.

When Fumigation Is Required

  • Wood packaging materials subject to ISPM 15 regulations
  • Containers carrying certain agricultural goods or animal feed
  • When pests are detected during a customs inspection

ISPM 15 requires that wood packaging such as pallets and crates used in international trade be heat-treated or fumigated and marked with the IPPC symbol.
