External Transit, or T1, is a European customs transit procedure that allows non-Union goods to move through the EU or common transit countries without paying import duties and taxes immediately. The goods remain under customs control until they reach an approved destination, customs office, bonded warehouse, or final clearance point. A T1 document helps track the movement, secure duties through a guarantee, and ensure the goods are either cleared, re-exported, or placed under another customs procedure.
External Transit (T1) is the EU and UK customs transit procedure that allows non-Union goods to move through customs territory without paying import duties, under a customs guarantee. It is the same as the T1 transit document.
- Used to move goods not yet cleared for free circulation through EU territory
- Required when cargo moves between EU ports or from EU ports to bonded facilities
- A financial guarantee must cover potential customs debts during the transit
- Managed through the NCTS (New Computerised Transit System)
