Live Unload

A live unload is a delivery process where the truck driver waits at the destination while the consignee or warehouse unloads the trailer or container. Once unloading is complete, the driver leaves with the same empty equipment. Live unloads are common when the receiver does not keep trailers onsite or when equipment must be returned quickly. Delays during a live unload can lead to detention, wait time, or additional accessorial charges.

Live unload is a delivery arrangement where the driver waits at the consignee’s location while the truck or container is being unloaded. The driver does not leave and return later, as in a drop arrangement.

  • Carrier typically allows 1 to 2 hours of free unloading time
  • Detention charges apply for each hour of wait time beyond the free period
  • Live unload is necessary when the carrier cannot leave equipment at the facility
  • Scheduling dock appointments reduces live unload wait times and detention charges
