Packing List

A packing list is a shipping document that itemises the contents of a shipment, including product descriptions, quantities, weights, dimensions, package counts, and sometimes marks or reference numbers. In international trade, customs brokers, carriers, warehouses, and buyers use the packing list to verify what is being shipped and how it is packed. It supports customs clearance, cargo inspection, receiving, inventory checks, and claims if goods are missing, damaged, or incorrectly packed.

A packing list is a detailed document prepared by the shipper that itemizes the contents of each package in a shipment, including descriptions, quantities, weights, and dimensions. It is required for customs entry and carrier documentation.

What a Packing List Includes

  • Shipper and consignee name and address
  • Invoice number and date reference
  • Package number, type, and dimensions
  • Content description per package
  • Quantity per package
  • Net weight and gross weight per package
  • Total number of packages and total weight

Packing lists must be accurate and consistent with the commercial invoice. Discrepancies between the invoice and packing list are a leading cause of customs holds and examination orders.
