container-ship-top-view-(reduced)LA-Long Beach Port Congestion Worsens – Chassis problems continue to plague the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.  Jon Slangerup, Chief Executive of the Port of Long Beach, recently stated that they are in “crisis mode.”  As a result, a Chassis Relief Team has been established to help coordinate more efficient chassis positioning throughout the port in the short term.  They are also looking at medium and long-term solutions to the chassis issues.

FMC Approves Maersk-MSC Alliance – The Federal Maritime Association (FMC) grated Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) approval for their 2M alliance.  These steamship lines are the two largest in the world, accounting for 35% of Asia-Europe and 31% of transatlantic volume.  The new alliance will pair 185 vessels and, according to Maersk, save $350 million annually.

Customs Finds Gypsy Moth in Hawaii Port – U.S. Customs official discovered several Asian Gypsy Moth egg masses at the Port of Honolulu.  The destructive species was found on a ship from Taiwan and marks the first time it was seen in the Hawaiian Islands.  This moth can eat more than 600 different types of foliage and fly up to 25 miles.
