It all began with John Dedola,
It began with John Dedola, a determined young man from Sardinia. At 18, he left the island for America with a few dollars, strong convictions, and a relentless work ethic. He took any job that paid—from selling Italian-language newspapers in Delaware to working department store floors in Michigan—learning fast and moving up.
By the early 1970s, John was married with four young children—the youngest still in diapers—when he was offered a challenge that matched his ambition: join the team managing international buying and shipping for a major U.S. retailer. He moved the family to London and quickly found himself spending more time in the air than at home, traveling across Europe and Asia to establish relationships with vendors and carriers. It was a demanding role—personally and professionally—but it offered a unique vantage point. John saw firsthand how disjointed and opaque international logistics could be, especially for buyers.

At the time, the ocean freight industry was evolving. Containerization was transforming trade, yet smaller importers were often left behind—paying inflated rates or relying on freight forwarders whose income and loyalties lay with the carriers. Around that some period, a new model was quietly gaining ground: the NVOCC. Unlike traditional forwarders, NVOCCs focus was their shipper client. They bought space from carriers, issued their own bills of lading, and were accountable for the cargo from origin to destination.
John immediately saw the opportunity. As a buyer himself, he understood what importers needed—and where the system fell short. In 1976, he brought his family to California and founded Dedola Global Logistics to do things differently: to bring transparency, accountability, and client-focused service to an industry that had long prioritized carriers over customers. The regulations were yet to be written when John charted the course for a journey that started as a one-man-show—a man on a mission.
From the beginning, the business reflected John's values: hard work, clear communication, and respect for every client. His sons, Marc and Stephen, joined early, helping shape a company built not just to compete—but to care. As we enter our 50th year in business, that spirit is still at the heart of everything we do.
