What is customs brokerage?
Customs brokerage is the professional service of helping importers and exporters clear goods through customs. A customs broker prepares and submits customs entries, classifies products, calculates duties and taxes, reviews documentation, coordinates with government agencies, and helps ensure shipments comply with import and export regulations.
Mistakes in valuation, origin, tariff classification, permits, or documentation can delay cargo, increase costs, or create compliance penalties. Read the full customs brokerage definition in our glossary.

The Importer of Record stays accountable
The Importer of Record (IOR) is the party legally responsible for ensuring that imported goods comply with all U.S. laws and regulations, and for paying all applicable duties, taxes, and fees. CBP holds the IOR liable for the accuracy of customs entries.
A customs broker can file entries on the importer’s behalf, but the Importer of Record remains accountable for the accuracy and compliance of the import transaction. Learn more about the Importer of Record.
Your importer identity record matters too. CBP Form 5106 creates the Importer of Record number, and since September 18, 2026, CBP voids that number immediately when it finds the Form 5106 information inaccurate or incomplete. Shipments cannot be entered until the number is reestablished, so the address, email and phone on file must be the importer’s own. Read what the form requires in our CBP Form 5106 glossary entry.

Tariff Code Review
A comprehensive tariff code review is essential for keeping your supply chain compliant, efficient, and cost-effective. Dedola’s expert customs brokers thoroughly examine your product classifications and HTS codes to identify opportunities for reclassification, duty reductions, and trade program benefits. Accurate tariff codes not only ensure legal compliance and faster customs clearance, but also help you avoid overpaying on duties and prevent costly delays or penalties. With Dedola, you gain personalized guidance and proactive support to optimize your duty obligations and keep your global operations running smoothly.
