Automated Manifest System (AMS)

AMS, or Automated Manifest System, is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection electronic system used to submit cargo manifest data before goods arrive in or depart from the United States. Carriers, NVOCCs, and freight forwarders use AMS to provide shipment details so CBP can assess risk, screen cargo, and support customs processing. In ocean freight, timely AMS filing is especially important because missing, late, or inaccurate data can cause holds, delays, penalties, or loading issues.

The Automated Manifest System (AMS) requires carriers and forwarders to submit cargo manifest data to U.S. CBP before a vessel or aircraft arrives, enabling advance security screening of inbound cargo.

Filing Deadlines

  • Ocean: 24 hours before loading at the foreign port
  • Air: 4 hours before arrival for long-haul flights
  • Rail: 2 hours before U.S. border arrival
  • Truck: 1 hour before border crossing

Late or inaccurate AMS filings can result in Do Not Load orders or penalties from CBP.
