Cargo owner’s liability coverage is insurance that protects a cargo owner if their goods cause damage, injury, pollution, cleanup costs, or third-party losses during transport, handling, or storage. It is different from cargo insurance, which protects the value of the goods themselves. This coverage may be important for shippers moving hazardous materials, heavy equipment, machinery, chemicals, or other cargo that could damage vessels, vehicles, terminals, warehouses, or other property if an incident occurs.
Cargo Owners Liability Coverage protects cargo owners from third-party claims when their goods cause damage to other shipments, property, or personnel during transit.
When It Applies
- Cargo that leaks or contaminates other shipments in a shared container
- Hazardous materials causing injury or damage to port workers
- Incorrect weight declarations causing vessel stability issues
- Disputed general average contributions
This coverage is separate from standard cargo insurance and is especially important for shippers of chemicals, hazardous goods, or heavy industrial cargo.
