A closed area is a restricted zone within a port, terminal, warehouse, yard, or logistics facility where access or cargo movement is temporarily or permanently limited. It may be closed because of congestion, safety risks, customs control, security rules, equipment shortages, hazardous cargo, inspections, labour issues, or operational limits. When cargo is in a closed area, truckers or consignees may be unable to pick it up or move it until the facility reopens access or releases the restriction.
In freight and customs, a closed area is a port terminal, bonded warehouse, or designated zone under customs control where access is restricted. Goods in a closed area have not cleared customs and cannot be removed without proper authorization.
- Containers at a port terminal awaiting entry or inspection are in a closed area
- Goods in a bonded warehouse are under CBP supervision
- Removing goods from a closed area without authorization is a customs violation
Understand closed area restrictions when planning sampling requests or partial releases before customs clearance.
