A container fumigation fee is a charge for treating a shipping container, cargo, pallets, or wood packaging with approved fumigants to eliminate pests, insects, or biosecurity risks. It is often required for agricultural products, food goods, timber, wooden packaging, or shipments moving to countries with strict quarantine rules. The fee may cover fumigation service, certification, container handling, ventilation, inspection, and documentation needed to prove the shipment meets destination import requirements.
A container fumigation fee is charged when a container must be fumigated to kill insects, pests, or biological contaminants before cargo is loaded or before the container can enter a country.
When Fumigation Is Required
- Wood packaging materials subject to ISPM 15 regulations
- Containers carrying certain agricultural goods or animal feed
- When pests are detected during a customs inspection
ISPM 15 requires that wood packaging such as pallets and crates used in international trade be heat-treated or fumigated and marked with the IPPC symbol.
