Final Mile

Final mile, also called last mile, is the final stage of delivery where goods move from a local hub, warehouse, terminal, or distribution centre to the end customer or final destination. In logistics, final mile delivery is often the most complex and costly part of the supply chain because it involves residential access, appointment windows, route planning, customer communication, proof of delivery, and special services such as liftgate, inside delivery, or white glove handling.

Final mile (or last mile) is the last leg of the supply chain, delivering goods from a warehouse or distribution hub to the end customer’s location. It is typically the costliest and most complex segment of the logistics chain per unit of distance.

Final Mile Challenges

  • Residential deliveries require liftgate, appointment scheduling, and inside delivery
  • Urban density increases delivery complexity
  • Failed delivery attempts generate redelivery charges
  • Customer expectations for same-day or next-day delivery increase cost pressure

How to Optimize

  • Use carriers with dense local delivery networks
  • Provide accurate delivery instructions and time windows
  • Consider regional final-mile specialists for residential freight
