FLEGT | Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade

FLEGT, or Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade, is a European Union initiative designed to reduce illegal logging and prevent illegally harvested timber from entering trade. In import logistics, FLEGT is relevant when timber or timber products are shipped into the EU from countries with approved licensing systems. A valid FLEGT licence can help prove that the wood was legally harvested and may be required for customs clearance, product compliance, and responsible sourcing documentation.

FLEGT is an EU initiative to combat illegal logging and improve forest governance in timber-producing countries. Under the FLEGT Regulation, importers of timber and timber products into the EU must demonstrate due diligence to show the wood was legally harvested.

  • Applies to timber, sawn wood, plywood, paper, pulp, and furniture with wood components
  • Importers must collect information on the species, country of harvest, and supply chain
  • FLEGT licenses from participating countries can be used to demonstrate legality
  • Non-compliance can result in fines, confiscation, and reputational damage
