Oversize Surcharge

An oversize surcharge is an extra shipping fee charged when a package, pallet, container, or freight shipment exceeds a carrier’s standard size limits. It may apply because of length, width, height, combined dimensions, irregular shape, or handling difficulty. Oversize shipments often require more space, special equipment, manual handling, route planning, or carrier approval. This surcharge is common in parcel shipping, LTL freight, truckload transport, air cargo, and ocean freight.

An oversize surcharge is an additional fee charged when cargo dimensions exceed a carrier’s standard size limits, requiring special handling, equipment, or routing. It applies to freight that is too large for standard containers, trailers, or loading equipment.

  • Ocean FCL: oversized cargo may require an open-top, flat rack, or out-of-gauge shipment
  • Air freight: pieces exceeding standard ULD dimensions require special handling
  • Trucking: oversize permits, escort vehicles, and restricted routing may be required
  • Project cargo and heavy machinery frequently incur oversize surcharges
