Per Diem Charge

A per diem charge is a daily fee applied when shipping equipment, such as a container, chassis, or trailer, is kept beyond the allowed free time. In logistics, per diem usually compensates the equipment owner or carrier for the delayed return of equipment that could otherwise be used for another shipment. It is common in ocean freight, rail, and trucking and may be charged per calendar day until the equipment is returned to the approved location.

Per diem charges are daily fees assessed for the use of carrier equipment such as containers, chassis, or trailers beyond the carrier’s allowed free time. They apply to both demurrage (equipment inside the terminal) and detention (equipment outside the terminal).

  • Demurrage per diem: daily charge for a container inside the port terminal beyond free time
  • Detention per diem: daily charge for a container or chassis outside the terminal beyond free time
  • Rates typically escalate in tiers (e.g., $75/day for days 1-3, $150/day for days 4-6, $200+/day thereafter)
  • Free time varies by carrier, port, and trade lane

Minimizing per diem exposure requires fast customs clearance, prompt container pickup, and quick empty container returns.
