One Family, Fifty Years of Freight

From a buyer’s desk in the early 1970s to today, what carried through is a point of view, not just a name on the door.

Early 1970s

The buying side

John Dedola works in international buying and shipping for a major US retailer, developing vendor and carrier relationships across Europe and Asia.

1976

Dedola is founded

Tired of watching the industry move cargo instead of solving problems, John founds Dedola Global Logistics in California. The buyer’s point of view comes with him.

1990s

The second generation

John’s sons Marc and Stephen join the business and learn it the same way John ran it: know the cargo, answer the phone, own the outcome.

Today

Three generations in

The second generation leads, the third is in the business, and Dedola works as a dedicated logistics department for US importers on Asia to US lanes.

It All Began with John Dedola

John was a determined young man from Sardinia. At 18, he left the island for America with a few dollars, strong convictions, and a relentless work ethic. He took any job that paid, from selling Italian-language newspapers in Delaware to working department store floors in Michigan, learning fast and moving up.

By the early 1970s, John was married with four young children (the youngest still in diapers) when a major US retailer offered him a challenge that matched his ambition. He moved the family to London and spent more time in the air than at home. The job was demanding, but it gave him a rare vantage point: he saw firsthand how disjointed and opaque international logistics could be, especially for buyers.

At the time, the ocean freight industry was evolving. Containerization was transforming trade, yet smaller importers were often left behind, paying inflated rates or relying on freight forwarders whose income and loyalties lay with the carriers. Around that same period, a new model was quietly gaining ground: the NVOCC. Unlike traditional forwarders, NVOCCs focused on their shipper clients. They bought space from carriers, issued their own bills of lading, and were accountable for the cargo from origin to destination.

John immediately saw the opportunity. As a buyer himself, he understood what importers needed and where the system fell short. In 1976, he brought his family to California and founded Dedola Global Logistics to do things differently: to bring transparency, accountability, and client-focused service to an industry that had long prioritized carriers over customers. The regulations were yet to be written when John charted the course for a journey that started as a one-man show: a man on a mission.

From the beginning, the business reflected John’s values: hard work, clear communication, and respect for every client. When his sons, Marc and Stephen, joined the business, they helped shape a company built not just to compete, but to care. As we enter our 50th year in business, that spirit is still at the heart of everything we do.

Our goal is to keep your freight moving so reliably that you can spend your energy running your business.

Why US Importers Choose Dedola

In 2025, 99.5% of Dedola shipments cleared without a demurrage or detention charge. The number comes from an internal review of 3,500 client shipments, and a shipment counts against us if it carries any charge, whoever caused it.

We hold that rate because these charges are almost always downstream of something catchable earlier: a document filed late, a chassis not booked, a rolled sailing nobody flagged. So we catch those things ahead of the deadline, not after the invoice. It is not perfection. It is reliability you can plan around, and we are glad to walk you through the method.

CONTACT DEDOLA

Clients who know the difference

Dedola is personal and always within reach. You can’t get that anywhere else.

“Before working with Dedola, I felt like a small fish, working with a bigger company, and had no visibility into where my cargo was or when it would arrive. Now, with the TrakitPro portal and the ability to reach a real person whenever I need it, everything is so much easier.

The customer service has exceeded my expectations: I get answers right away, which frees up my time and mental energy to focus on growing my business. It’s absolutely worth it.”

I feel like I’m the biggest and sometimes the only customer that Dedola has

“We’ve been working with Dedola for five years, and even in our first year, we saw immediate savings in our spending. I can easily check where my containers are, their status, and what’s happening at any time. Dedola is always one step ahead, providing information, sharing updates, and offering helpful suggestions. What stands out most is the automation and the ability to get a clear snapshot of everything just by looking at the TRAKITPro dashboard. Dedola helped Gemini Displays look and act like a much bigger company than we are.”

Dedola keeps my shipments simple and precise

"For 30 years, Dedola keeps my shipments simple and precise. They help my vendors in Taiwan and they don’t even come to me when they have questions or feedback–they communicate with Dedola and soon the packages arrive. You want to worry about the quality of your product, not about who drives it to the boat."

Dedola offers the full service we wanted and we’ve worked with them for over 20 years

“We ship from China and we have more than 10 different factories that deliver to Dedola’s warehouse. They consolidate everything and handle any problems on our behalf, notifying us of any delays ahead of time. I don’t need to worry about the shipping. We tell them what we need and they do it.”
