The Port of Melbourne is the largest container and general cargo maritime hub in Australasia. The port was created in the mid 1800’s when the government altered the course of the Yarra River to improve shipping access. Soon, docks were being built progressively downstream to allow for larger ships. The port currently handles almost 40% of the country’s container traffic.
