Daimler Debuts Self-Driving Truck in U.S. – The German automaker Daimler chose to debut its self-driving 18 wheeler atop the Hoover Dam in Nevada. Daimler received licenses for two vehicles in Nevada to drive on public roads.  The auto-pilot system will only take control on the highway and a driver is still required to be in the cabin at all times.  Large trucks caused almost 4,000 fatalities in the U.S. during 2012, it is estimated that 90% of these were due to driver error.

Iran Releases Maersk Vessel – More than a week after seizing the M/V Maersk Tigris near the Strait of Hormuz, Iran released the vessel.  Iranian navy vessels fired warning shots before seizing the vessel last week.  The stated reason for the seizure was Maersk’s failure to make a payment in a dispute with a private Iranian oil company.

Obama to Speak at Nike HQ for Trade Deal – President Obama is scheduled to speak at Nike’s Oregon headquarters to tout a proposed 12-nation free trade agreement.  Nike is hoping to eliminate costly tariffs on its footwear imports from Vietnam.  New Balance, one of the few footwear companies with U.S.-based manufacturing, is concerned about changing the tariff structure for imported footwear.
