Chinese New Year Kicks Off, Celebratory Items in Short Supply for U.S. Revelers – This week marks the start of Chinese (Lunar) New Year.  However, for those in the U.S., some traditional celebration items are in short supply.  Items such as mung beans, sticky rice and various trinkets –along with at least 100,000 bottles of soy sauce –are stranded off the coast of California, hostage to the ongoing and seemingly intractable West Coast port problems.  There is hope that the involvement of Labor Secretary Thomas Perez will have a positive impact on labor negotiations between the ILWU and PMA; however, any substantial relief to importers will likely be much too late for Chinese New Year.

New Zealand Requires Heat/Fumigation for U.S. Auto Imports – In an effort to avoid introducing the brown marmorated stink bug into New Zealand, officials announced that all U.S. vehicles must be heat-treated or fumigated before shipping to New Zealand.  It is believed that the brown marmorated stink bug originally reached the U.S. in the 1990s through infested packing crates from China or Japan.
