FMCS Announces ILA Negotiation Extension – The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) Director has announced an agreement by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) to extend contract negotiations for an additional 30 days until January 28th, 2013. For the time being, the ILA strike has been averted.

Port of Tacoma Extends Terminal Lease – The Port of Tacoma commissioners have extended their lease for the 40-year old Schuster Parkway grain terminal until 2040. The lease extension will increase the port’s income from the facility.

IMO Re-Routes California Vessel Lanes to Protect Whales – The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved vessel lane changes to the Ports of San Francisco and Los Angeles in an effort to protect endangered whales from ship strikes. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Coast Guard and the shipping industry have all worked together to craft the lane modifications.
