Washington D.C. –This week,President Obama proclaimed May 22nd of every year to be National Maritime Day.  The crews of ships sailing under the American Flag are to observe this day by decorating the ship with a hoist of flags, a practice called “dressing” the ship. This was signed into law on May 19th.

New Container Weight Verification Requirement

London, UK –The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved a new mandate requiring the submission of accurate information regarding the weight of “packed export containers”. Inaccurate container weights cause ongoing safety and customs problems. The mandate will go into effect in July 2016.

Possible New Chilean Port

Santiago, Chile – Last week, the Chilean President Michelle Bachelet discussed plans for a possible new port to be located at the center of the country. This is part of a government investment plan aimed at economic development and innovation. The president estimated that $1 billion will be used over the next 4 years to improve Chile’s economic outlook.
